Prepare Minecraft for Christmas - Tips and Tricks
Want to add some Christmas stuff to your Minecraft server? Here are some practical ways to do it without spending hours.

Christmas in Minecraft is fun if you're into that sort of thing. Here's how to actually do it without wasting your time. Some of these ideas are good, some are just for show. Pick what works for your server.
If you need a server to host your Christmas world, get started with BiomeHosting or browse our available modpacks. Keep in mind that modded Christmas servers may require more RAMโcheck our modded server RAM guide to choose the right plan.
โ๏ธ 1. Start With a Snowy World (Vanilla or Modded)
Play in a Single-Biome Snowy World
Generate a world with only snowy biomes. It's the easiest way to get a winter vibe. Downside: you're stuck in snow biomes, which can get boring fast.
Add a Cold & Freezing Survival Mod
Add a temperature mod like Cold Sweat or Tough As Nails. It adds survival mechanics where you need to stay warm. It's more challenging, but some players find it annoying. Your call.
Create an Oversized Pine Forest World
Use custom world generation for bigger trees. Looks nice but requires more setup. Probably not worth it unless you're really into the aesthetic.
๐ 2. Add Christmas Mods, Modpacks & Enhancers
Add a Christmas Modpack
There are Christmas modpacks out there. Most are pretty basic - they add some decorations and maybe a few mobs. Christmas Holidays and Winter Wonderland are decent. Don't expect anything groundbreaking. Note that modded servers require more RAM than vanillaโsee our modded server RAM guide for specifics.
Individual Christmas Mods
If you want more control, you can selectively add holiday mods for:
- Ornaments and decorative blocks
- Candy canes, wreaths, and stockings
- Santa hats, presents, and festive tools
Add Winter Shaders & Christmas Resource Packs
Use shaders for cozy lighting or resource packs that turn:
- Torches โ candles
- Mobs โ reindeer, elves, penguins
- Leaves โ frosted snow
This can make your world look different. Whether that's "magical" is up to you.
๐บ๏ธ 3. Install a Christmas Map for Instant Festivity
Download a Holiday Adventure Map
Download a pre-built Christmas map from Planet Minecraft. Quality varies - some are good, most are mediocre. Better than building from scratch if you're lazy.
Turn It Into a Server Hub or Spawn
Use it as a spawn or event area. Players will see it for 30 seconds then go play. Don't spend too much time on it.
๐ 4. Holiday Builds to Create With Your Friends
Build a Giant Christmas Tree Together
Build a big Christmas tree. It's a classic build. Use wool, concrete, or whatever blocks you have. It takes time but looks good if you do it right.
Make a Cozy Christmas Village
Build a winter village. It's a lot of work. Looks nice if you put effort in, but most people half-ass it and it looks bad.
Create a Gingerbread Town
Gingerbread houses are cute but time-consuming. Use brown blocks for the house, white for frosting. It's fine if you have the time.
Build an Ice Castle or North Pole Palace
Ice castles are cool but they take forever to build. Also, ice melts near light sources so you need to be careful. Good for screenshots, annoying to maintain.
๐ 5. Add Christmas Datapacks (No Mods Needed!)
Holiday Loot Tables
Datapacks can add holiday loot to chests. It's a nice touch but don't expect players to care much. Most will just take the loot and move on.
Weather Datapacks for More Snow
Force snow with datapacks. It's annoying after a while because snow builds up everywhere. Use it sparingly.
Custom Mobs, Hats & Behaviors
Give mobs festive hats with datapacks. It's a small detail that some players find amusing. Others won't notice. Easy to set up though.
๐ง 6. Holiday Mobs & Cosmetics (Plugins & Mods)
Give Mobs Festive Hats or Outfits
Use UltraCosmetics or similar plugins to add hats to mobs. It's purely cosmetic. Some players like it, others think it's dumb. Your call.
Cosmetic Particles & Effects
Add particle effects. They look cool for about 5 minutes, then they're just visual clutter. Use them if you want, but don't go overboard.
Christmas Pets
Cosmetic pets are fine if your players are into that. Most will ignore them after the novelty wears off.
๐ Quick Server Event Ideas
Want to host something special? Try these:
- Gift Exchange: Players leave wrapped gifts at a designated spot
- Build Contest: Challenge players to build the best festive structure
- Scavenger Hunt: Hide presents or special items around the map
- Secret Santa: Randomly pair players for gift-giving
Bottom Line
Christmas stuff in Minecraft is fun if you're into it. Most of these ideas are fine, some are a waste of time. Pick what you actually want to do and skip the rest. Don't overthink it - players will appreciate the effort even if it's not perfect.
Real talk:
- Start early if you're doing big builds (they take time)
- Don't go overboard (players will get tired of it)
- Focus on what your community actually cares about
- Most players just want to play, not admire decorations
